Democrat Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City on Tuesday, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He succeeds Mayor Eric Adams, who ended his reelection campaign in September but remained on the ballot.
At 34, Mamdani—a self-described democratic socialist and state assemblymember—will become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century. He entered the general election as the frontrunner after winning the ranked-choice Democratic primary by 12 points earlier this year.
Mamdani’s digitally driven campaign, centered on cost-of-living concerns, energized New Yorkers and drew sharp criticism from opponents, including President Donald Trump.
