Indian-origin Harman Singh Kapoor says 'halal eggs' were pelted at his restaurant a day after his arrest

An Indian-origin restaurant owner in west London says his premises were targeted again hours after his arrest, claiming “halal eggs” were thrown at the site late at night.Harman Singh Kapoor, owner of the Indian restaurant Rangrez on Fulham Palace Road in Hammersmith, wrote on social media that the incident happened shortly after a public confrontation outside the restaurant that drew police intervention.

He posted a video of the closed premises which showed eggshells stuck on the shutter of the restaurant. He was seen cleaning the mess with a mop and water.Kapoor said: “Again, halal eggs were pelted at my restaurant last night. This cannot stop me from doing my job and feeding my family. I will clean this up and carry on with my usual business.”

The incident adds to a controversy that has been building around the restaurant for months and recently led to a confrontation outside that went viral social media.

Rangrez has operated in the neighbourhood for about 16 years and has already announced plans to close. Kapoor says the business had been facing pressure and harassment after it publicly stated that it would not serve halal meat.According to Kapoor, the decision was tied to his Sikh faith. Some Sikhs prefer meat prepared through the jhatka method, in which the animal is killed instantly with a single blow. Many interpret Sikh teachings as discouraging consumption of kutha meat, often understood as meat prepared through ritual slaughter such as halal.

Halal meat follows Islamic dietary rules. In halal slaughter the animal’s throat is cut while invoking the name of God and the blood is drained from the body. For Muslim communities it forms part of a broader set of religious dietary practices.Kapoor says his refusal to serve halal meat led to months of tension around the restaurant. He has alleged that the business received fake online reviews, threats and repeated confrontations outside the premises. The situation escalated on last week when a crowd gathered outside Rangrez. Social media posts claimed that more than a hundred people surrounded the restaurant and blocked the entrance while shouting slogans.Earlier that day Kapoor had promoted a “Non Halal meetup” at the restaurant, inviting supporters to gather at 2 pm and bring recording equipment to document any disturbances. Videos posted later showed heated scenes outside the restaurant.

Kapoor also said he had taken his kirpan, the ceremonial blade carried by observant Sikhs, to protect his family during the confrontation.Police eventually arrested Kapoor while the crowd dispersed. Moreover, Harman Singh Kapoor has also been targeted by Khalistani activists due to his strong criticism of the Khalistan movement. He has reported threats, vandalism, and harassment from supporters of the movement.
