Row over Indian student subleasing Texas apartment to sister for $1,000 in viral phone recording: ‘Stop the invasion’

An Indian student looking for a private apartment in Plano, Texas, is under scrutiny after talks about subleasing her apartment went viral online. MAGA activist Carlos Turcios posted on X that “Indian is being accused by the Texas Investigation Unit of attempting to sublease her apartment for $1000 a month illegally.

H1-B Visa Aliens and Violent Muslims are invading North Texas.

STOP THE INVASION!”The conversation at the centre of the controversy involves the student, Shravanthi Varma, arranging housing for her sister. In recordings of their alleged conversation, she discusses sharing a one-bedroom apartment with another person while she moves part of her workweek to Austin.Varma explained: “Uh, only actually just only me. I am only staying only one.

So my address, I mean, my office is in Austin, so I’ll be moving to Austin. So, like, couple of days, like, uh, weekly twice I will be in Austin. So I just want to give my apartment for someone like with me to share it. So I’ll be staying like staying in the hall. So she, uh, it is like 1 BHK apartment. So the main bedroom I’m going to give like someone who is ready to take like to share with me.

The discussion also covered lease arrangements. She indicated that the lease is in her name and that her sister could pay her directly, rather than being added to the lease.

“Uh, she can give me the cash and all. Because here there is no sub lease terms. So I’ll be in the lease, so just she need to be paying to me. I’ll be pay from my side when she’s with me,” she said. The apartment in question is at the Michigan Gate Apartments in Plano, and Varma clarified that her sister could visit the property over the weekend to see it in person.“Yeah, uh, she can come at the weekend if she want. Can you share her number so that we can connect directly so that whenever she want, I will be available here if she is ready,” Varma said. The conversation also included a brief exchange about their origins.“Um, I am from the Hyderabad state,” said the visitor. “Oh, she, she is also from from there, from the Telangana, Telugu speaking, vegetarian, non-veg,” Varma replied. While the social media post frames the discussion as part of a larger narrative about H1-B visa holders and immigration, there is no independent verification that any legal action has been taken. Local authorities have not released statements confirming any investigation into illegal subleasing or violations connected to the conversation.
