Iran War News: ’83 children killed, 254 injured amid escalating hostilities in Lebanon,’ UNICEF says

UNICEF on Monday warned of a sharp rise in child casualties as hostilities intensify in Lebanon, urging all parties to protect civilians and vital infrastructure and to take immediate steps to de-escalate the conflict.

Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said the escalating violence was having a devastating impact on children. “According to the latest reports, at least 83 children have been killed and 254 wounded since 2 March, as hostilities have intensified,” he said, noting that more than 10 children have been killed each day over the past week.

“In the last 28 months, 329 children have reportedly been killed in Lebanon and 1,632 were injured,” he added, describing the figures as “staggering”.

Beigbeder said ongoing strikes were forcing families to flee their homes, with nearly 700,000 people — including around 200,000 children — displaced.

“UNICEF calls on all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure… and to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law,” he said.

US Iran War: ‘Iran war will end very soon,’ Trump vows

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that American military operations in Iran would soon come to an end, seeking to reassure global markets shaken by the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The fighting had earlier pushed stock markets lower and driven oil prices above $100 a barrel after Tehran, under new leader Mojtaba Khamenei, launched missile attacks on Gulf states and suggested the Strait of Hormuz could remain closed.

However, markets recovered after Trump signalled the campaign would be brief. “It’s going to be ended soon, and if it starts up again they’ll be hit even harder,” he said, describing the operation as a “short-term excursion”.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards responded that Tehran, not Washington, would “determine the end of the war”. Iranian forces also launched new missile and drone strikes across the region, targeting Gulf countries and Israel.

Israel Iran War: Syria accuses Hezbollah of firing shells into its territory

Syria has accused Iran-backed Hezbollah of firing artillery shells from Lebanon into Syrian territory overnight, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The Syrian army said shells landed near the town of Serghaya, west of Damascus, the state news agency SANA reported.

Military officials claimed Hezbollah targeted Syrian army positions and said reinforcements from the group were observed along the Syrian-Lebanese border.

“The Syrian Arab Army will not tolerate any aggression targeting Syria,” the army said in a statement to SANA.

Tensions come amid the wider regional conflict after Hezbollah attacked Israel following the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes.

Hezbollah previously supported former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024.

Iran War News: ‘We’re waiving certain oil-related sanctions,’ Trump moves to curb global price surge

US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington may introduce temporary waivers on certain oil-related sanctions to ease the impact of rising global energy prices caused by the escalating conflict involving Iran. He said his administration is considering removing some economic restrictions in the short term until the regional situation stabilises.

“We’re also waiving certain oil-related sanctions to reduce prices. So we have sanctions on some countries. We’re going to take those sanctions off until this straightens out,” Trump said.

He added that the measures could become permanent if conditions improve, stating, “Then who knows, maybe we won’t have to put them on. There’ll be so much peace.”

Trump also confirmed that the United States and its partners are prepared to deploy naval forces to protect commercial shipping routes if tensions escalate.

“But when the time comes, the US Navy and its partners will escort tankers through the strait if needed. I hope it’s not going to be needed, but if it’s needed, we’ll escort them right through,” he added.

US Iran war: Iranian foreign minister rules out negotiations with US

I don’t think that question of talking or negotiating with Americans will be on table. We have bitter experience of talking to Americans. After three rounds of talks, we made progress, and yet they attacked us…the consequences are serious not only for us but for the whole region,” says Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi.

US Iran War: Australia grants asylum to Iranian women footballers

Australia granted asylum to five members of the Iranian women’s soccer team who were visiting the country for a tournament when the Iran war began, a government minister said Tuesday.

The announcement followed days of urging by Iranian groups in Australia and by U.S. President Donald Trump for the Australian government to help the women, who had not spoken publicly about a wish to claim asylum. The team drew widespread speculation and news coverage in Australia when players didn’t sing the Iranian anthem before their first match.

Early Tuesday, Australian federal police officers transported five of the women from their hotel in Gold Coast, Australia, “to a safe location” after they made asylum requests. There, they met with Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke and the processing of their humanitarian visas was finalized, the minister told reporters in Brisbane hours later.

“I don’t want to begin to imagine how difficult that decision is for each of the individual women, but certainly last night it was joy, it was relief,” said Burke, who posted photos to social media of the women smiling and clapping as he signed documents. “People were very excited about embarking on a life in Australia.”

The women granted asylum were happy for their names and pictures to be published, he said. Burke added that the players wanted to make clear that they were “not political activists.”

US Iran War: Israel strikes Iranian missile launcher after barrage

Israel said Tuesday that it had struck an Iranian missile launcher shortly after a barrage fired from the Islamic republic triggered air raid warnings in several Israeli areas.

Late Monday, Israel’s military said it identified a round of Iranian missile fire and was working “to intercept the threat.”

The Iranian launches sparked air raid warnings in several parts of Israel, forcing people to head for shelter.

But the Magen David Adom emergency services said it received no reports of casualties following the latest round of Iranian fire.

The Israeli military then said it “had struck the missile launcher that launched missiles toward the State of Israel a short while ago.”

Before the latest Iranian attack, Israel had announced what it called a “broad wave” of strikes on Tehran, the second such assault launched on Monday.

US Iran War: Iran responds to Trump’s ‘war could end soon’ remarks

The Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps has responded to Trump’s comments that the war in Iran would end soon, saying that they will “determine the end of the war”.”

Tehran will not allow “one litre of oil” to be exported from the region if the US and Israeli attacks continue, the IRGC says, according to Reuters.

Oil prices have fluctuated amid rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial to the global energy market as around a fifth of the world’s oil passes through the narrow waterway.

Israel Iran War: Govt orders higher LPG production for domestic use amid crisis due to West Asia conflict

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued orders to oil refineries to increase Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) production and directed that such additional output be channelled specifically for domestic use. This decision follows recent geopolitical disruptions that created constraints on the global fuel supply chain.

The government prioritised domestic LPG supply to households to ensure energy security for citizens amidst the ongoing uncertainty in the global oil and energy market due to West Asia crisis.

“In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on supply of LPG, Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use,” the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced on X.

To manage the current supply environment, the ministry introduced a 25-day inter-booking period for consumers to avoid hoarding and prevent black marketing. “The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced 25 day inter- booking period to avoid hoarding/black marketing,” the Ministry said.

Israel Iran War: Trump hints at temporary waiver of on specific oil-related sanctions

US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington could implement temporary waivers on specific oil-related sanctions to mitigate the impact of surging global energy costs caused by the escalating conflict involving Iran.

The president noted that his administration is exploring the short-term removal of certain economic restrictions until the regional situation reaches a point of stability.

“We’re also waiving certain oil-related sanctions to reduce prices. So we have sanctions on some countries. We’re going to take those sanctions off until this straightens out,” Trump said.

He further suggested that these adjustments might become permanent if the geopolitical climate improves, stating, “Then who knows, maybe we won’t have to put them on. There’ll be so much peace.”

In addition to economic measures, the US president confirmed that the United States and its international partners are prepared to deploy military assets to protect commercial shipping routes in the Gulf should tensions rise.

Israel Iran War: Pentagon used up around $5.6 billion in first 48 hours of war report says

The Pentagon expended $5.6 billion worth of weaponry during the initial forty-eight hours of its military operations against Iran, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The staggering figure has intensified concerns among officials regarding the rapid depletion of the “scarce supply of America’s most advanced weaponry.”

This estimate, presented to Congress on Monday, has sparked fresh debate over the administration’s claims that the mission is not “quickly eroding the US military’s readiness.”

To sustain the ongoing campaign, the White House is expected to request a supplemental defence budget this week, which could reach tens of billions of dollars.

In response to inquiries from the Washington Post regarding the status of national stockpiles, Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, maintained that the department has “everything it needs to execute any mission at the time and place of the President’s choosing and on any timeline.”

US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States and Israel are “winning very decisively” in the ongoing military campaign against Iran and suggested the conflict could end within days.

His remarks came as the Middle East conflict, which began with joint US-Israeli strikes in Iran on February 28 – entered its 11th day. Tehran has retailated by targeting both Israel and Gulf states hosting US bases.

Speaking at a press conference at Trump National Doral Miami, Trump described the joint operation — named Operation Epic Fury — as one of the most extensive military campaigns in recent years.

“Over the past nine days, we’ve carried out some of the most powerful and complex military strikes and maneuvers the world has ever seen,” Trump said.

The president claimed the campaign had significantly degraded Iran’s military capabilities, including its naval forces, drone infrastructure, and missile launch systems.

“We’ve wiped every single force in Iran out very completely. Most of Iran’s naval power has been sunk. It’s at the bottom of the sea,” he said.

Trump said nearly 50 Iranian naval vessels had been destroyed. “It’s almost 50 ships. I was just notified. It’s 51 ships.”

According to the president, Iranian missile and drone capacity has been sharply reduced as a result of sustained strikes.

Meanwhile, Iran has named Mojtaba Khameini, son of late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new supreme leader. Khameini was killed after the US and Israel targeted his residence in Tehran on the first day of the conflict. Several family members of Khamenei were also killed.

In retaliation, Iran began targeting both Israel and Gulf countries that host US bases in the region and civilian infrastructure in those countries. On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian “apologised” and said that Iran would target Gulf countries only if attacked first.

After Khamenei’s death, the Islamic Republic was being governed by a three-member body, with President Masoud Pezeshkian as one of its members.
